I couldn't have said it any better!

It does feel like this sometimes, but for some reason it's getting to me this time. I feel like I go around in circles remembering more things that I need to do while I am in the middle of doing something else and then I get side tracked and forget what I was originally doing! It's very frustrating. Maybe this is half to do with my failing memory. Where did it go?! I really would like it back.

In other news, I have decided to do the City to Surf this year. 14km. August 2012. I've started going for a run at lunchtime with the others in the office as we are going to register as a team, so hopefully I will stick to it since I have others counting on me!

So now that Winter is just around the corner, I have started to get things organised for my suitcase. Winter clothes sure take up a lot space! Last weekend I ended up at the markets shopping with my fingers corssed, hoping to find some warm jackets. As it turns out, Australia does sell them - not entirely sure why. It doesn't get THAT cold... Anyway, Cute and green furry jacket:

The flight from Riga to Helsinki lasted about 40mins which was great! My Uncle and Aunt (Reijo and Hillevi) met us at the airport to take us to Pirkko’s place (Mummu’s sister).

I was finally glad to have a room to myself. It was cute and always made Nicole and I laugh whenever we found something unique like that toy wombat, or corn!

We then had some fresh rolls Pirkko had made earlier that day and then went for a Sauna! I tried to remember the place and only as we were walking down the stairs did I remember the rooms where I used to play hide and seek with Reijo.

31st July 2009

The next morning Reijo picked us up and we headed firstly to where he and mum (+ family) grew up before they came to Australia. It was quite moving to be there and see the place. It was a tiny unit, where 2 adults and 7 children lived for 6 years.

We then went to Helsinki Zoo which is on its own little island! Great idea if you ask me: If any animals break out, blow the bridge!

After the zoo, we headed to a great restaurant called Zetor. I had some creamy Finnish Hash (HUGE and served in what looked like a dog bowl!), Nicole had Herring Fillets and Lauren had the Sauteed Reindeer. I also had a raspberry cider which was absolutely amazing. I think I love you Cider.

We then went for a walk around Helsinki (only quickly as it was raining!). Apparently they hadn't had rain in several weeks and the time we are there (we as in me!) it rains. Typical. We walked up the main road and saw the Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square and also the oldest house in Finland!

We then head back to Pirkko's and on our way gave her a call to see if she could start the Sauna again: when in Finland! When we arrived we met her grandson Heikki who I apparently played with when I was 3. Neither of us remembered each other, which was hilarious! He wasn’t sure what to say but his girlfriend was a sure chatterbox. She was telling Nicole and Lauren that they should have an authentic sauna and hit each other with Birch branches. Classic.

1st August 2009

Reijo picked us up again in the monring and we headed into Helsinki. We got dropped off at the markets in Helsinki and spent the first part of the monring browsing the markets and eyeing off the punets raspberries. We walked around for a while and after took a walk down the Esplanade in Helsinki: The flowers in this place are crazy cool + it was a nice day!

We then walked to the Natural History Museum of Helsinki to see some mooses as we hadn’t seen one at the zoo (apparently it was sick!). Those things are huge! Reijo was telling us that most road accidents in Finland are caused by Moose.

We then headed back to the Markets where we bought some raspberries (after thinking about them all day!) and sat by the water eating what we could, and eventually feeding the ducks the rest. I can’t remember fully, but I remember going to the Baltic Beer festival as well! The beer was like 20% and way too much for me to drink.

We again had a Sauna when we got back to Pirkko's and also had an Apple and Rubarb Cider that Reijo had given us when he dropped us back that night! Mmm. Cider!

2nd August 2009

Today we drove down the Kings Road and headed into Vanha Porvoo: Medieval Old Town with rust-colored timber shore houses lining the river and quaint cafes. It has an interesting history, especially the Cathedral...

Porvoo has fought for its very ex-istence on several occasions overthe centuries. At the beginningof the 16th century, Danes arrivedby sea to destroy the city. TheRussians burned Porvoo twice.In 1760, a Porvoo housewifemade fish soup, and the fire itcaused destroyed the majority ofthe buildings in the city. The lastmisfortune was the arson in 2006that greatly damaged a key land-mark of Old Porvoo, the cathedral.

We walked up the coble stone streets and had a look inside. It looks pretty cool for a burnt church. We could only stay inside for a quick look as they were about to have some kind of ceremony. It looked like some kind of induction into a cult. Young Swedish kids in white robes marching in twos into the entrance. Creepy.

Of course, it starts to rain again! Reijo was cursing the weather quite politely (hehe).

After hiding out in a cafe and having hot chocolate we finish the walk around Porvoo and head back to their place for some Cider – YUM, and home cooked meatballs. Perfect!

After they dropped us back to Pirkkos we said our goodbyes and thanks! I wished they could come over soon! I loved every minute of it.

That night after we finished packing our things, Nicole and I had a night of chatting, giggling and crying! I couldn’t believe she was going to be away for about a year!

3rd August 2009

After a very tearing morning of goodbyes, I found a lovely note written by Nicole! I’m not sure if I told her but it made me cry, again! I totally loved it. You’re a great friend Nicole!

I then had about 5 hours until my flight. I spent the day in the garden with Pirkko, taking photos of her garden + nic nacs! I then went to my room to check if I had all my things when she came in and asked what I had bought on my travels. I found my little souvenirs and went to the kitchen to show her and after I had finished she went on a little mission and came back with a procelain duck for me to take home. It's so old and faded, but I think its the best of all.

As I was putting the items back into my I saw a little squirrel hopping along in the back garden. Too cute!

When the time came to leave, Pirkko came with me to the airport and she had a coffee and I had an apple juice. We were talking and then she asked if I had finished my apple juice as she had liked the bottle and wanted to take it home with her. It totally made me laugh as I thought she was joking, but she wasn't! She took the bottle and stashed it neatly into her hand bag as if it was normal.

22nd July 2009 - Athens

The flight was pretty quick, and the landing bumpy. We asked for direction to our hotel at one of those tourist booths: Bus X95 to Syntagma Square.

After arriving at Syntagma Square (which was the last stop) we walked to Kidathineon Road to the Student and Travellers Inn. We checked in and dropped off our stuff. We then took a walk to the Acropolis which was literally only a 10minute walk from the Inn. We entered from the East side and had to walk up a huge hill and stairs to get to the top. Again, worth it. The view of Athens is pretty amazing, although I wouldn’t call it beautiful. Lots of ugly buildings, but terrific views of the ocean and hills. We then headed back to the Inn, showered and headed back through the streets to a nice little restaurant that we had passed along the way. It was away from the hustle and bustle of the main street but we had an awesome view of the Acropolis at night. We ate authentic Greek Salad with Tzatziki sauce, chicken suvlaki and watermelon. Yum!

23rd July 2009 - Athens

The next morning was hectic. We woke up at 6am as we thought we were getting picked up to go to the Port for our boat trip to Paros. As it turns out, the reception was supposed to have an envelope with our ferry tickets which had our departure time. We asked the old guy at the counter for them, but nadda. 40 minutes later, he found an envelope in the ‘mail room’. Imagine that: Mail in the mail room! They (being the tour we booked) had even delivered it the day we arrived, but no-one mentioned it to us. Lesson learnt: Always ask for documents on arrival. Even if you aren’t expecting any! Nicole and I were pretty stressed by this point and who knows what we were capable of if the old guy didn’t find them!

With 5 hours to kill (Yes, pick up was 12pm, not 6am!), we sat around the courtyard and periodically went on the net when there was a free computer. Finally, 12pm arrived, and not a moment too soon: I could’ve cut the tension in the air between us. We hopped into our taxi and arrived at Pireaus Port, Gate 9 and boarded our ferry to Paros. The Ferry left 2 hours late for our 9 our journey. The ride was pretty boring (and long, gah!) and mostly had us out on deck, in the shade and then eventually watching the sunset while Nicole and I played clapping games.

We arrived at Paros Port at 9:30pm and caught a taxi to the High Mill Hotel. It didn’t look like much from the outside, but it was also dark. We checked in and headed straight to bed.

24th July 2009 - Paros

Paros is amazing. I opened the window to the most gorgeous view of the ocean. After soaking in the view, we headed down for some breakfast and then headed out to the main street to see what’s happening in Paros. It was buzzing. We stopped for something to eat at a place called Cyber Cookies. We ate bagels and drank our straweberry and banana smoothies and jumped on the net for our free 20mins!

We then continued our little adventure through the streets were I went on a little shopping spree. I bought 2 beach bags and a couple of bracelets and anklets. We then thought it was time to hit up the local beach.

It was only about 700m to the beach and a short walk down a hill. It felt like a private beach. Not very big, but the Mediterranean was just lovely. It’s nice not having to worry about mauled by a shark, stung by a blue bottle and actually being able to see the sea ground! We spent the rest of the afternoon down at the beach.

For dinner we ate at a cute little restaurant we had walked passed earlier. I had some mussels in tomato and feta, and we also had some baklava, on the house! We also had wine. Let’s just say that Greece is probably not know for it’s wine.

We decided to head out for the night and asked Demetri (the receptionist) where to go. Apparently Salonne was the place to be. We walked down the main road, not actually knowing were it was and just decided to have some cocktails at a place with a fluro sign saying 5Euro Cocktails until 12pm. Turns out, it’s Salonne! Winners. It’s a nice place and the strawberry daiquiris are delish. We had decided to turn in after a few cocktails. The sun, surf and cocktails definitely takes it out of you. Hard life, I know!

25th July 2009 - Paros

We walked to the Port to catch the ferry to Naxos, which was luckily only a 20min walk with luggage in tow as the taxis were all booked! It was only about a 2hour ferry ride to our next island: Naxos.

After porting in Naxos, we headed to our next hotel: Hotel Sergis. We dumped our bags and headed straight for the beach for some much needed R+R. The beach was again a short walk from our hotel and this one was a lot bigger than any at Paros.

All showered and relaxed, we walked back to the beach to eat. Nicole and I had stuffed calamari with feta and tomato. It was huge!

26th July 2009 - Naxos

Nicole and I went for a walk around town in Naxos, while Lauren stayed in the room. The streets weren’t nearly as busy as Paros nor as funky. We ended up in Ancient Naxos where we nearly got ran over by a forklift. After walking around for some time in 36 Degree heat, it was time for food, a book, banana chairs and the beach. We had a cocktail (Sangria and Lauren had a Singapore Sling). The sand was extremely hot, so every time we wanted to go for a dip, you would have to make a quite dash for the water, or shade-hop!

That night we went and ate at a restaurant called Dolphins that Nicole and I had passed earlier and met a lovely lady who reminded me completely of mummu! She gave me a hug on arrival and continuously smiled and patted us when she walked past.

PS. Earlier we had asked reception if they had our ferry tickets, and she said no. We then rang the emergency number, yet again to let them know we hadn’t received them. As it turns out, they had been dropped of and were put in a drawer. Seriously: The Greeks are great, but I think they lack the need to communicate important things!

27th July 2009 - Naxos

We caught a taxi to the port. While we were waiting we noticed a statue which we had seen on a couple of postcard. We took pictures of it: at the time not even knowing what it was.

The Flying Cat ferry arrived. We were all thinking “Hooray for high speed ferries”, but Nicole and I started to get motion sick on the boat. It totally ruined us for the day.

27th July 2009 - Santorini

Luckily the Ferry ride was a short 3 hours. On arrival, we hopped onto a mini bus which was going to be dropping us off at our hotel: Hotel Sunrise. After a short nap, we changed and headed into town for a look. The views of Santorini are definitely postcard material. We also had a quick shop. Quick you say? Santorini is very expensive. After dinner we headed to a rock club called Tithora. It was tiny, cute and contained rude painting! We ended up drinking quite a lot – 4 vodka and lemonades each (and I think the drinks were triple vodka!)

The next morning was a total ride off. Nicole and I managed to get breakfast, even though we weren’t ready for it. The loud Australians at the table behind us were extremely irritating. All Australian tourists give the 5% of good ones a bad rep. After stomaching as much as I could, we headed back to the room and slept until 12:30pm.

We then thought it was a great day for a massage and headed down to reception to book one at the Suites of the Gods – which is a worth while name. It was perfect. After our massage we headed out on a high, and 5 mins later were waiting at a bus stop. Oh the irony!
Nicole and I then decided to check out one of the beaches, Kamari, while Lauren headed back to the room to sleep off the rest of her hangover. Kamari is the rockiest beach I have ever seen and been on. It was also quite windy.

We saw the funniest trio of friends: So odd it was perfect. Jock, geek and short fat guy taking photos of each other. No smiling, and no touching. Classic.

We headed back to the room about 7:30pm and then headed out for dinner. We were going to go out after food, but we didn’t. We are Lame.

29th July 2009 - Santorini

We booked a Volcano and Hot Springs tour the previous day so this morning we headed down to the old port and boarded what looked like a Pirate Ship. Our first stop was the Volcano. We had to walk to the top which was a huge effort in the heat, and a challenge. Our brilliant walking shoes never failed (Go Havianas!) and we made it to the top. It was hot, litereally, beneathe our feet. Magma is situated in the ground beneath us and you could feel it through your shoes. There was also a great view of Santorini from the top.

We then headed back down and hopped back onto the boat. Next stop: Hot Springs! It was great jumping off the boat and into the sea. We needed to swim over to the hot springs and as you got closer, the warmer the water became. After sitting in the murky brown hot waters for a while and seeing onions and raddish float past we swam back out to the boat.

We then headed over to Thirssia for some lunch at Caption Johns and a swim at yet another rocky beach! The locals were great: they really do look like those greeks you see on postcards!

While eating we noticed some donkeys and remembered a donkey ride we saw back at Santorini. Nicole and I instantly decided it was brilliant idea to go on a donkey ride when we ported in Santorini!

Okay, so. It was 5euro, 600 stairs, 3 girls and 2 donkeys! The most memorable event of the year so far. I had paid for Nicole and I, and I think he assumed we wanted to ride the same donkey, so as Lauren got on hers (reluctantly mind you) Nicole and I walked around the corner. So far the only person on a donkey was Lauren, hating every minute of it. Nicole and I on the other hand had no idea what was going on: where are our donkeys? As we turned the corner there were more, and he motioned for Nicole to get up on the donkey, so she did. He then proceeded to push me up onto the SAME donkey! It was hilarious. I am leaning on this poor donkeys head trying not to knock Nicole off with my leg! It was a lot longer than the 4euro cable car ride to the top, but you can’t make memories like this if you tried! It was indeed a Kodak moment.

That night we finally had a seafood platter! It wasn’t what we were used to, but at least it wasn’t deep fried!

30th July 2009 - Santorini

We woke at 4:30am so we could catch a taxi to Santorini airport to catch our 7am flight to Athens, then had to wait at Athens airport for out 3pm flight to Helsinki, via Riga.

After finally being able to check-in our luggage, we boarded our flight to Riga and then on arrival, had to powerwalk through Riga airport to catch our connecting flight to Helsinki.

Once arriving in Paris and getting rid of the car, we had to catch the metro to Bercy and then Rome. On the train we shared our sleeper trains cabin with a lovely lady and her 2 children. If I had to share with the cabin next door with teens I probably would’ve killed someone! After a couple of hours we converted our seats into bed. Lauren and I got the lower bunks, which are also known as our Bat Caves and Nicole had a middle bunk. We all pretty much slept the whole way until about 7am.

19th July 2009

As we pulled into a station, we all had our fingers crossed hoping that this was NOT our stop. It was dirty and full of graffiti. But alas, it was Termini station.

Our start in Rome was to say the least, a little hectic.

We were given directions and a map from a very helpful who also pointed us in the right direction for our metro line. We headed to Line B for our stop: Piramide. On arrival we started looking for our Hostel. Apparently it was close, but no-one could give us a location, direction or any other helpful information. Romans are quite arrogant and don’t want anything to do with you if you ask them for directions! We started to panic. The phone number and address was wrong (or hidden) and so we ended up dragging our luggage back to Termini, hoping to find an internet hotspot where we could look up the actual details. We were looking around and we ran into the same lady who helped us earlier. All I can say is thank goodness! She owns a Bead and Breakfast but unfortunately was booked out so she rang a couple of places for us to stay. She then proceeded to walk us to the hotel and make sure we arrived safely!

She also gave us a few tips on Rome:

Don’t drink anything unless you see it opened in front of you
Don’t go to the parks at night
That’s things like this (not finding your accommodation) happen all the time and that’s one of the reasons she does this for free!

I guess it’s a good thing, because if it wasn’t for her – we all would’ve had distaste for the Italians.

After we got settled in, we headed for the Laundromat. How fun! I think this is the most dreaded task of a traveler. We had the map and had directions to the Laundromat but we still managed to get lost! Rome is definitely hard to navigate. There are so many what look like dead end streets, where in actual fact if you head up a flight of stairs all will be okay. They are also narrow and the buildings are quite tall so it feels like you are a rat in a maze. We eventually found the Laundromat and the guy offered to do it for us for an extra 5! Bargain! So we went and had something to eat while we waited: Pasta of course!

It was a cute little place called “Gallo Matto” Chicken House on (via Cavour, 107). We were one of two tables so we had great service from our waiter who proceeded to put a blow up crown on top of Nicole’s head. Hehehe!

After filling up on pasta, we went in search of an internet café and then headed back to pick up the laundry, went for a shower and headed back out for dinner. It was on the main road (Nationale) where we staying and the tables were out on the street. You had the option of eating inside – but it seemed out of character to do so! We all shared a seafood pizza and then had an awesome dessert which was brought to the table on fire!

20th July 09

We had breakfast up at a little place near Termini in front of the fountain at Pza Della Rebubblica. The waitress was a little rude, but whatever. It was the only breakfast place we could afford. We then decided it was probably a better idea to hop on one of those open top buses for the day and see the sites. Nicole and I bought a hat (mine looking a little gangster!). We then bought our ticket and jumped onto Roma 110. We had only driven about 5 minutes up the road and turned a corner…. Wham! There is the Colosseum. It’s huge, but what a sight! We stayed on and decided to come back later during the day. We hoped off after driving past The Italian Forum ruins, some fountain and lots of churches and white building at Trevi Fountain. We ate some sorbet and resisted the urge to jump into the fountain and instead throwing in some 5, 2 and 1 cent coins. We also browsed a couple of shops on the way back to the bus stop.

Next stop: The Colosseum. We joined an English tour group with an Italian Tour Guide as there were no signs inside to describe what you are looking at. It was a great idea. Our guide was quite funny and told us some facts/myths of what you see in the movies with references to Gladiators etc. It was quite interesting to hear that the tigers were actually kept under the arena in total darkness for up to 72 hours before an event. They were then lifted onto the arena, and as they did so, they were subjected to shock and blinded by the light. The gladiators would then wound the tiger to make it weaker to fight.

After the Colosseum, we headed back and Lauren wanted to rest. Nicole and I had seen some Harem Pants earlier that day and decided to head back up Nationale to buy some. On our way, we had a look in an Italian Leather shop were we both ended up buying a jacket! Out of pocket, but totally loving the idea of owning an authentic leather jacket we returned to our original mission of buying Aladdin pants! When it’s 40 degrees and you are in Rome – you MUST own these pants.

After our splurge and on a high, we rushed back to show Lauren our buys! So, we didn’t exactly get the reaction we were going for. She was pissed off because she wanted to buy one too. Who would’ve thunk it!

We then went out for some dinner at this little Sardinian Place down off the main road. It was absolutely amazing! Not to mention affordable! We all had a great meal, and I was still trying to force myself to eat it even though I was totally stuffed! We drunk 2 bottles of red wine and were extremely drunk by about 11pm and decided to head back to our room which was luckily, only a short walk. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep.

21st July 2009

We again had breakfast at the same place. Sooner or later, the waitress will love us. After our fruit cocktails, we headed to the metro and caught the next train to The Vatican. We first climbed the stairs in the Basilica to the top of the dome. Saving 2 Euros, we climbed the entire way to the top! It was totally worth it, although as we got closer to the dome, the more people became irritating. I was almost going to tackle these 2 tourists in front of me who thought it was a marvelous idea to keep taking photos during the climb. It wasn’t the fact that they were tourists, or the fact that they were taking photos, it was the fact that I was on a role putting one foot in front of the other, bent to the right (it was a dome after all) and wanting to get to some fresh air. So finally, 551 stairs later, the view was fantastic!

What comes up, must go down. Once at the bottom, you arrive at the Basilica were the wax tombs of previous popes lay. It’s pretty creepy. We also took a picture of a statue who Nicole and I thought was none other than Jesus. Turn’s out it was actually Peter.

We then walked over to the Sistine Chapel. It was truly amazing inside. The artwork and the detail involved was breathtaking. I took quite a lot of photos of the painting I liked which mostly involved women and cherubs. Nicole and I spend the rest of the time trying to find the ‘Creation’ Scene. It’s a huge Chapel and it took us a while to get out! Last stop in the Chapel is of course the prayer room (and we still hadn’t seen the Hand of God) . Iit is supposed to be quite, but there was a lot of whisper. I look up and voila! There it is. I snuck a photo:

Once we were out, we headed back to do a bit of shopping. I bought a white dress (19Euro) and another pair of Aladdin pants – Purple of course!

Final thoughts on Rome are quite pleasant. After a rocky arrival and thinking we were sleeping on the streets, Roma turned out to be great: Leather jacket, outstanding buildings and architecture and of course, a great hotel.

After waking, we packed our things and checked out and headed back towards Termini where we needed to catch a train to Fuimicino for our flight to Athens. Luckily we didn’t stop for breakfast otherwise we would’ve totally missed our flight – even though it was running a bit late.

Okay. So. BRILLIANT NEWS - I am heading back to Europe in December for another month of traveling with my bestie! I am soooo happy! Just working out the tiny details (okay, one MAJOR detail - the plane ticket over - but whatev's) It's gonna happen! Hooray!

I have finally resorted to the good old ways of blogging; firstly on my omputer in a text file and then pasting it into blogger. The internet has been tested by speedtest.net and so far I have managed to get:

Bad. Telstra sucks. Bigtime. And there is no other operator I can use that will give me relable, non-hair tearing internet connection, for my lines are pared. *bangs head on table* I even resorted to borrowing Ray's optus wireless to see if that would work but no. Not one single bar of reception.

So, enough of my rants about the internet (but who would've thought this day and age I would be getting LESS than dial-up!).

It has only now come to my attention that I have also been slacking in communicating with people! For some reason this week I have been completely avoiding people for no good reason. I have put it down to me just beening stressed from needing to get a job done, up and ready and LIVE on Friday and that actually fell through because of the client. I then just wanted to be alone when I got home and unfortunately that lead to me being quite mean.

Sewing Project #1 Progress Report

I really thought I was going to be finished last Thursday, but it took me a good 2 out of the 3 hours to HEM a skirt. If I had a rolling hem foot for my sewing machine it would have halved the time it took me, but I guess it was good practice to be doing it the long way around. I really hope Ann remembers to order some in though. Hehe.

On Saturday I decided it was a good day to try and follow the same pattern with a different fabric and see how I would go on my own. I was doing so well cutting out the pattern and pinning but then I got to the zipper and I had a mind blank. I totally forgot which way the zipper was to be sewed to the fabric. Luckily mum walked in at that time and sorted me out. I then finished the skirt to the same point as Skirt #1 and so I should be finished BOTH THIS THURSDAY! Hooray!

So I have started sewing and have purchased my lovely sewing machine (above: Bernina, Bernette 82e)... Hooray! I really love it and I can't wait for Thursdays to come around. I sound like an old nanna, but hey. I'm currently making a skirt which is totally cute and has tulle underneath which, if you sew, you know is a pain! But the skirt has a zipper and a waist band and is pretty cool for a first project! I will post pics probably this week as I should be finished this coming Thursday.

We also had our netball Grand Finals which we lost, boo. We were totally the better team, not to mention the better looking team. hehe. We then had a few drinks over at Whitney's and played sing star to drown our sorrows.

SO... This post is definitely lacking internet connection. It's driving me crazy. SAVING now before I smash my screen.

15th July 2009 (continued)

We were greeted by Rene and Terry who were the most loveliest people ever! Not to mention the house and rooms: Gorgeous! Lauren and I headed out for a walk around the small town and it was so pretty and peaceful. I think there were a total of 2 restaurants (the expensive one, and the not so expensive one), a bakery, pharmacy and church. Not big at all, but I think I could definitely live there. I would have my own garden and grow all my own fruit + vegies and even get Terry and Rene to build me a swing, just like theirs! hehe. It would be so Belle.

That night we had sparkling wine infused with raspberry (me), violet (Lauren) and peach (Nicole). We then had the most delish dinner ever made. 5 courses with things like orange chicken, vegetable terrine, vanilla + ice cream pudding and of course a fine selection of cheese. Oh how I love cheese. I was so full by the second course, but it was all so good that I continued to eat and ended up eating everything!

If you EVER go to the Loire Valley in France, you must MUST stay at Le Petit Clos! And then look for our entry in the guest book!

16th July 2009

After having a great nights sleep on an awesome bed, breakfast is served. Homemade French toast, homemade yoghurt, fruit, croissants, bread, pastries and coffee. What a mouthfull! After breakfast we recieved directions to our first destination: Chateau Chenonceau. Today it was Nicole's turn to drive! We headed out towards the chateau and Nicole drove perfectly down the windy French country roads, even manuvering around the dreaded round-a-bouts, which turned out to be not so bad in the end. After seeing the sign for the chateau behind a tree and turning around to go down the road, we parked the car and walked up towards the chateau. As it turned out, we actually parked on the wrong side and where we were was an exit. We were told we needed to walk 1km to the bridge, cross the bridge and then walk down to the entry. It was 40 degrees and I just wanted to go inside. Grr! So we walked the 1km to the bridge, crossed it, and then walked the 1km back towards the entry. We ended up walking through what seemed like someones field, past some carni's setting up the dodgems til eventually we found the correct entry. Walking through the tower of trees towards the chateau was amazing.

Before we made it to the chateau, we went to the Maze! Nicole and I were singing "we're painting the roses red" and as we were leaving had a race out of the maze. I lost :(

The entry to Chenonceau was breathtaking. Everything seemed so perfect. All the gardens were in immaculate condition. I just wanted to pick one of the flowers and stick it in my hair, but I resisted the urge.

Chateau de Chenonceau is 'the ladies chateau' and has been home to Diane de Poiters, Catherine de' Medici, Louise of Lorraine, Louise Dupin, Marguerite Pelouze and Simone Menier. I think I should have my name to this chateau as well! We had a look around and inside was just as nice, although it was not fully furnished. We then had something to eat in the Tea Gardens and then we were off to our next stop: Chateau Du Clos Lucé.

Clos Lucé is a mansion in Amboise (connected to the Château d'Amboise by an underground passage) where Leonardo da Vinci was invited to live by Francis I and settled in 1516. He lived there for the last three years of his life, and died there on 2 May 1519.

We then walked up the street passed some houses built into rocks to Château d'Amboise. Here in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert adjoining the Château, Leonardo da Vinci is buried.

Why are the beds so short you ask? Well it wasn't until we went to Castle Cheverny that we found out that at that time, people slept sitting up as the lying down position was reserved for the dead, and also they were afraid of swallowing their tongues.

17th July 2009

Again it was my turn to drive, and what a day to drive! It was raining, and I think we were all wearing thongs. Well, at least our feet got a mud bath! After our lovely breakfast, we hopped in the car and I drove us to Chambord. This place was HUGE and by far my favourite of the chateaus. It had this awesome dual spiral staircase! I was on the other staircase and Nicole and Lauren on the otherside. It was pretty neat. We then ate some delicious onion soup - I must say I had a few doubts about ordering, but I am glad I did. Bonus points for the fact that it comes with cheese!

Next on the to do list was Castle Cheverny. Tintin anyone? Herge, the author of Tintin used Cheverny as inspiration for Marlingspike Hall! How cool is that. The interior was to die for and I actually took pictures of things that I will one day get Chris to make me.

That night we went to dinner at the local restaurant (the not so expensive one) which was a short 2min walk for the B&B. The meal wasn't THAT great. Nicole and I had fish which was very dry and Lauren had ordered organ meat by mistake - yup, ew! But we had cheese and red wine from Cheverny so it was all good in the end.

Our last wonderful breakfast (that Lauren threw up as she ate too much) at Le Petit Clos. We packed our bags and jumped in the car and headed towards Charles De Gaulle airport were we needed to drop off the car. WHY did we choose Charles de Gualle you ask? I don't know. But it was the furthest airport we could possibly go to. Anyway, it was Nicole's turn to drive again and we were doing fine with directions until one turn off. We ended up in Antony, which we weren't supposed to, so we turned around and got back on the A6. However, we didn't realise we were going in the wrong direction until about 20mins later! We pulled up at a service station to ask for directions, but no one spoke English so we bought a French street directory. After figuring out where we were and turning around, we were back on track. Even though I get sick if I read, look down or even breath wrong in the car, I managed to direct the way back towards the airport. It was tense, but we stuck it out and everything worked out in the end.

I had no idea there was another book by Sophie out! How awesome. It's called Twenties Girl... AND I also received and email with her saying she is working on a new Shopaholic book. OMG!!!! I'm excited!! Although, I have yet to finish her other book (The Undomestic Goddess and Remember Me?) but I FIRST need to finish New Moon... gah!

Chapter ONE

The thing about lying to your parents is, you have to do it to protect them. It's for their own good. I mean, take my own parents. If they knew the unvarnished truth about my finances/love life/ plumbing/council tax, they'd have instant heart attacks and the doctor would say, "Did anyone give them a terrible shock?" and it would all be my fault. Therefore, they have been in my flat for approximately ten minutes and already I have told them the following lies:

1. L&N Executive Recruitment will start making profits soon, I'm sure of it.

2. Natalie is a fantastic business partner, and it was a really brilliant idea to chuck in my job to become a headhunter with her.

3. Of course I don't just exist on pizza, black cherry yogurts, and vodka.

4. Yes, I did know about interest on parking tickets.

5. Yes, I did watch that Charles Dickens DVD they gave me for Christmas; it was great, especially that lady in the bonnet. Yes, Peggotty. That's who I meant.

6. I was actually intending to buy a smoke alarm at the weekend, what a coincidence they should mention it.

7. Yes, it'll be nice to see all the family again.

Seven lies. Not including all the ones about Mum's outfit. And we haven't even mentioned The Subject.

As I come out of my bedroom in a black dress and hastily applied mascara, I see Mum looking at my overdue phone bill on the mantelpiece.

"Don't worry," I say quickly. "I'm going to sort that out."

12th July 2009 (continued)

I attempted to write in my travel journal on the train from London to Paris, but ended up feeling a little sick so opted for a nap instead. The next thing I know we are in France! Looking outside the window in awe... the countryside of France is stunning. Not many hills, but luscious and green with cute houses! I was definitely looking forward to France. I heard two things: You either love it, or think its overrated.

Our first stop was our new hostel Oops!. It looks great on the outside and inside, but the staff are neither friendly nor helpful. We had a great view from our room and we did have a room mate who was non-existant the first couple of days. After we got settled we caught the metro to the Eiffel Tower. Absolutely stunning. It may be a bunch of ugly looking metal, but geez its impressive. I don't understand why or how some people don't like it! We didn't actually climb it (yet) but we did go buy some crepes and eat them over by the park. We sat for awhile soaking up the Paris atmosphere before we decided to head back for some shut eye. I still can't get over how bright it is at 11pm. We were chatting for awhile before we realised it was 2am!

Actually, before we went to bed, we attempted to do the laundry. One of those annoying things that you just need to do when you pack light. It turned out to be a total disater. FIRST: We asked Jaun (one of the most loveliest people in the world - NOT!) if there are laundry facilities available in the hostel. His only answer was "No". So we asked (as he wasn't going to tell us unless prompted) where the nearest laundry place was located. Turns out there is one just around the corner approx an 8minute walk. Again, being prompted we ask "Is it open?" and he says "No". We decide to go check it out anyway so we at least know where to go the next day. So we head down the street, turn left as instructed and viola. Laundry. And it's OPEN! We go in and a helpful lady shows us how to operate it, thank god, as I don't think we would've worked it out. We are furious that we have to walk back up to get our laundry. Damn you Juan. We all grab our dirty clothes, and head back down in a huff and a puff. As we are in the laundromat sorting the clothes, the owner comes in and notifies us that in actual fact, he is CLOSED even though the lights are on and the door is clearly open. We grab our clothes and head back. Damn you JUAN!

Although, that all happened in the span of 20 minutes. Hahaha! Inside joke, ya'll!

7am, 13th July 2009

We woke up to do the laundry. Damn you Juan! As the washing was well, washing, we headed back up to the hostel for our all inclusive breakfast. We had a crossiant, bread and coffee. I think it was probably the best thing about Oops! at this stage. After breakfast and hauling the laundry back to the hostel we caught the metro to the Louvre. We walked across the road and through the entrance into the central courtyard and found ourselves at the glass pyramids and fountain on a gorgeous french day. I think we were all ready to jump into the water. We went inside and strolled around for awhile. We saw the Mona Lisa (hello, tiny much?!), The Nike of Samothrace (circa 190 BCE) and unfortunately the part where the Venus De Milo is, was closed off so I didn't get to see that, but the place is spectacular.

We then walked over to the Notre Dame. We didn't go inside as the lines were long and we were being hassled by Romanin gypsies so we took some photos and then headed over to the park to eat a baguette - Yum!

Since we were close by, Lauren was interested in seeing the Sainte-Chapelle so we walked a couple of blocks and found it. The Sainte-Chapelle: Gothic architecture from the 1300s with 15 high stained glass windows.

After we lifted our jaws off the floor and of course snapped some photos we went over to the Arc de Triomphe and trudged up the 280 stairs! I love it how there is a lounge at the top of the stairs for you to have a rest. It really is a terrific view of Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées which was our next destination: One of the most expensive streets in the world.

I had my photo taken infront of the Louis Vuitton store. We also went in and I could afford one of the wallets - only €300. Pity it was plain, otherwise it was totally sold!

It was now time for dinner, so we went over to Fountaine Saint Michel and ate at a little place down one of the roads. Yes, I ate escargot! and Yes, I loved it! I also had a pancake/omelette thing with cheese, ham and mushroom and for dessert was crème brûlée and I think Nicole and Lauren had lemon mousse. Totally delish! After getting a little tipsy from the fabulous french wine and now carrying food babies we headed to our final destination for the day: the Eiffel Tower. This time we climbed it! Unfortunately the top pier was closed so we could only get to the 2nd pier which was still an awesome view! It was shame, but it will give me a reason to go back - yay! (Although, I am not entirely sure you need a reason to go back, its just way cool, why wouldn't you?).

We had all pretty much decided that we were going to spend the entire day by the Eiffel Tower to celebrate Bastille Day with the rest of France. After finally meeting our room mate and making friends, Lauren invited Justin along to our Bastille Day picnic. The good thing about that was, Justin knew where to buy breakfast and food for the day. So we ended up walking down the road and ate at a cute little street cafe (where we waited quite some time for someone to take our order AND then bring it out) but a crossiant and a hot chocolate is definitely the way to wake up in France. We then continued walking down the streets where we bought some wine, raspberries, strawberries, baguettes and of course cheese!

We then hopped onto the metro and made a beeline for the Eiffel Tower. The previous night I met an American in the hostel who infirmed me that to get a got spot by the Eiffel Tower people get up at 6am, and it was now about 12pm so I thought we might have run out of luck, but once we arrived we found a great spot on the lawn, right in the middle! See getting up early never pays off! Anyway, by about 3pm our wine supply was out so Lauren and Justin headed out for more while Nicole and I held the fort (aka chatting, sipping wine and eating the cheese). There was a concert with 'legendary rocker Johnny Hallyday' (who?) + others which was great... not to mention entertaining with all its frenchness and of course a couple of English songs like "Born to be wild" and "Unchained Melody". Once the concert was over with, and the sun was going to sleep, the fireworks began. All I can say is... WOW. INSANE in the MEMBRAIN. They totally blew me away. Let's just say that it kicked Sydney New Year's fireworks butt, and then karate-chopped it in half, and then used its lightsabre to shred it into little teeny-weeny tiny bits! The day goes down as one of the Best. Days. Ever. awards!

Once the fireworks were over, it was time to pack things up and head back to the hostel. Simple task, no? Well, I guess everyone else had the same idea. It was suddenly crazy with people walking to the nearest metro which turned out to be closed, so continuing to the next metro, only to find that too was closed. We continued walking to the next one and the next thing we know, Nicole and I were no longer with Lauren and Justin, nor could we see, hear or find them in the crowd! Nicole and I did have a key to get back into the hostel, the only thing missing was a map. We had NO idea where we were, or where we needed to go. This was starting to go from bad to worse. We couldn't get into any metros and then, for some reason, people thought it would be a great idea to start setting bungers off! We both thought we were going to get our faces blown off, not to mention the long night of walking we had ahead of us to get back to the hostel - if we ever found out where we actually were! We were both looking around until, by pure luck, we spotted an unguarded metro and some people going down. I think we were both in a state of shock to actually realise, but I think we may have ran so fast to that metro we were almost flying. It was lucky we got onto that particular train when we did: Once we got onto that train we were so packed in for every other stop, no-one else was getting on. The girl standing right infront of me was continuously bracing herself for impact as the door would open at each stop (seriously, I could feel her tense her body it was that jammed), and there were people telling the ones trying to get on that there was definitely no room and they weren't getting on. Mean, Yes - but I was glad. I was on. Nicole was on. We were getting out of there in one piece and a lot sooner than first expected. Once we got off at our stop, we basically sprinted to our hostel not even looking at anything or anyone else except that construction area, knowing the hostel door was located only metres away. A HUGE sigh of relief. I have never been so happy to see my bedbug hostel bunkbed.

During this entire episode of LOST, Nicole and I were locked hand-in-hand!

15th July 2009

Woke up, and NOT with a hangover. Awesome! After drinking 6 bottles of wine between us I was expecting a lot worse. I think the only one affected by it was Lauren. We then headed down for our breakfast and then we packed our bags. I was feeling a little nervous this morning as it was the day of... The Car. I was driving first, which was a little scarey, but we googled some French road rules (as you do) and I felt prepared (Ha!). We made our way to Charles de Gaulle airport and picked up our little Citroen C3. Cute. Hybrid. I'm going to be driving a car in France. Shit. I headed over to the left side and sat down in the drivers seat, turned it on and viola, hit the gutter while turning. Only a little bit and no damage so it technically doesnt count, but it sure got my heart racing. Getting out of the carpark was a drama. Do they really need to make it so windy? Some of us have never driven on the opposite side and its a little akward trying to not hit the right side of the car into poles and what not. So after we successfully exited the carpark we were on the highway. It was strange at first, and I was definitely glad there was a traffic jam, but I told myself that I knew how to drive a car - what's the problem! After about 1 hour I was cruising down the A10 at 127km/hr and overtaking trucks. Once we got to the last few kilometers from our destination, exit 3, we exited the highway TWICE before the real exit. Both were pit stop and rest areas! I guess the French prefer a 40 minute notice for an exit. After finally exiting the highway and driving towards Chaumont sur Tharonne, we arrived at our lovely little bed and breakfast - Le Petit Clos.

9th July 2009

I arrived in London on the 9th July at about 6am after having slept most of the flight over (which was great!!) as it made the plane trip a lot quicker than I had expected. I basically woke up with about 4hrs to go, ate, watched a movie and then we were landing. Lauren and her dad picked me up from the airport and took me back to were they had been staying to shower and eat etc. and met up with Nicole and Sarah who had arrived earlier that morning. We then headed off to The Generator hostel on the tube, checked in and went to get something to eat. We ended up at an Indian restaurant where I ordered a Prawn Cocktail that was 3/4 sauce and some Chicken Curry.

We then went to the British Museum where we all decided to meet back at a certain time as we all wanted to go our seperate ways. Nicole and I had pretty much the same idea - ambush the place as quickly as possible. I mean, I love museums, but they are so huge you need to do it quickly, grab pamplets and read about it later... well, if you want to! We had covered most of the museum in about 1 hour. I did take quite a lot of photos here, one of my favs is probably the one of a mummy and I...

We also stumbled across the Rosetta Stone, which I honestly had no idea what it was and pretty much walked straight past it until we realised there were crowds of people around the area taking photos. Sarah had said it was a 'must see' before we seperated so we took a photo then read about it. Turns out, it's quite important: 'The Rosetta Stone carries an inscription in different languages which helped decipher the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script'. The same thing happened with the Elgin Marbles: Nicole and I were freaked out by the amount of headless statues that we decided to skip that room. I was secretly looking for marbles...

I really enjoyed the Assyrian section of the Bristish Museum. Some of the lion carvings where a little distressing, but overall, quite remarkable.

10th July 2009

After a hectic morning we finally made it to the Camden Markets. I absolutely LOVED IT. I bought two dresses for about £15-18 each: so cute! Did I mention it was HUGE? In hindsight I would have totally spent all my time and money here, rummaging through all the funky things - seriously though, I do think they top ANY of Sydney's markets that I have ever been to.

After the markets we walked back to the hostel for some dinner and then we were off again on our own little London pub crawl. Okay, so we only went to 3 and one of them was an Irish pub, but geez, drinks in London are a little pricey!

One thing I noticed about London was that most of the people are foreign. Maybe it was just the area at the time, but there were a lot of Aussies. Come to think of it, I don't think I met any British people! Another thing that I noticed, was that you can also tell a tourist by their shoes: Those in heels or those walking in pain (probably from walking in heels until eventually giving in and wearing flats) are usually foriegn.

11th July 2009

First stop: Harrods! Tell me something, what does this place NOT have? I was told later in the day they even have a pet store inside! Crazy. Again I think I could have spent a day, or 2, in here exploring the levels. Instead we strolled around and made our way to the food hall filled with cheeses, avocado filled with lobster (only £15.95 each) and amazing salads. We eventually decided on 2 different salads and a snack each and were going to head over to Hyde Park to eat in the sun under a tree but alas, being London - the rain appeared, so we went to starbucks instead!

After lunch we went to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The place was gorgeous, inside and out! Of course, I loved the fashion and jewellery sections. The amount of detail in the fashion pieces, seeing an original John Galliano from Summer 1987 and the charming jewellery dating back hundreds of years, pretty much blew my mind. Looking back, this was definitely my favourite museum. While Nicole and I were walking around we came across the Library which we went into to take a snap for one of Nicole's friends who likes libraries and in doing so, got told to leave our bags and sign in to go any further, so instead of actually going in Nicole pulled out her camera to take a quick photo and was told, and you have to say this in the strictest voice possible, "you cant take pictures in here" as the flash went off and then just walked out. Crazy Librarian.

We then continued marching. Next stop: Buckingham Palace. The place was huge-mungus!

We had to walk around the entire palace before we reached the entrance and saw a guard marching up and down. Must be the world's most boring-est job. Anyway, I think by this stage we were all needing foot massages and and UMBRELLA as it decided to suddenly poor down with rain. We were all trying to fit under the pillars at the front which had about a 20cm coverage. I even had 3 ponchos AND an umbrella back at the hostel, but in the end we came to terms that we were in fact, defeated by the rain, and so we soildered on to meet up with Sarah at the Tower of London. Nicole and Lauren headed off to a local pub for some drinks while Sarah and I had a tour of the Tower. The tour is run by the Yeoman Warders (aka 'Beefeaters') who are responsible for looking after prisoners and the British crown jewels. They live in the tower and the list of requirements to become one is very impressive. The outfits on the other hand. Poor guys. I suppose thats why they have a great sense of humour!

As we were standing in line to go see the crown jewels, I ran to get some coffee as it looked like it was taking forever, but when I got back, Sarah was already up to the door waiting for me so we could go in! Turns out, no drinks allowed inside! Typical. So we littered, and headed in. The crown jewels are gorgeous, huge and not to mention weird. I think the highlight was definitely the spoons and I have come to believe that everyone should own a sceptre.

Heading out of the Tower of London you come to the Tower Bridge which is just beautiful. I could have stood there for awhile if it wasnt for the rain!

So after our short (2 hour!) tour we started another: The Grim Reapers tour of London. We had also succumbed to the rain and bought ponchos. It was a great fashion statement!

The tour started around the Tower of London where we were told stories of be-headings (Nicole's favourite!) and then continuing over to the East End where we were told about Jack the Ripper and his victims, baby killers and other gruesome events. I thought the tour was fun, but I was glad for it to be over. The walk back to the hostel was painful. Apparently I looked like I was skiing, which was fine by me! The less movement and pressure, the better!

12th July 2009

After having out final breakfast at the hostel, Nicole and I went to see if we could by some proper walking shoes. Turns out, shops are closed on Sundays until about 11am and we had to be at St Pancras station AT 11am to catch our train to Paris! Typical. So no proper walking shoes as yet!

Today we booked the remaing part of the trip: Car Hire in France! I am soooo glad thats all over and done with - who would've thought that booking a holiday was such hard work! Now we just have to pay the remainder on arrival at each destination *sigh* That 90 million sure would come in handy right now!

Because my internets is pretty lame, I have just uploaded some photos. I might get Ray to upload some of the videos I took of her concert - which was pretty awesome by the way - up onto youtube. It was FREEZING though, and if Ray and I knew it was only going to start at like 9pm, we would have turned up 10mins before she came on. The opening band weren't that crash hot.

Lily performed all the songs of both her albums, plus Oh my god (Kaiser Chiefs cover) and Womanizer (Britney cover).

I think she should have played at the entertainment centre or somewhere a lilttle less shit. The horden pavilion isn't the 'place to be' - but in saying that, it was still a great concert. I really enjoyed the songs live. 10/10! hehe

Cream of Cauliflower Soup

Yesterday was officially the 1st day of Winter, which means there is technically only 37 days until I am in Europe where it is SUMMER. Oh. Love. How exciting!

So in attempting to do something productive, I found a recipe for some soups (yes, this is productive!) one of those being Cream of Cauliflower Soup. I know it doesn't sound very appetizing but we had it once at our once fav lil restaurant 'Restaurant Pepper' in Balmain... and it was Delicious!

Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients (serves 4)

2 tsp olive oil
1 brown onion, halved, finely chopped
650g cauliflower, cut into florets
2 small (about 250g) sebago (brushed) potatoes, peeled, coarsely chopped
625ml (1 1/2 cups) salt-reduced vegetable stock
330ml (1 1/3 cups) water
80ml (1/3 cup) extra light thickened cream
Extra light thickened cream, extra, to serve
Chilli & corn muffins, (see related recipes) to serve

Method

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, for 5-6 minutes or until soft.
Add the cauliflower, potato, stock and water. Cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, partially covered, for 15 minutes or until the cauliflower and potato are tender. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
Place half the cauliflower mixture in the jug of a blender and blend until smooth. Transfer to a clean saucepan. Repeat with remaining mixture. Add the cream. Place over low heat and cook for 1-2 minutes or until heated through.
Ladle soup among serving bowls and drizzle with extra cream. Season with pepper and serve with muffins.
